BMW 3 Series USB Music: Formats, Problems and Fixes

The 3 Series crossed three iDrive worlds: the E90's optional USB with strict rules, the F30's dependable FAT32-and-AAC years, and the G20's play-anything iDrive 7. Here's what each plays, and the fixes.

The short answer

3 Series 2006–2011 (E90): FAT32 stick, 32 GB or less, MP3/WMA/AAC — where USB was optioned. 3 Series 2012–2018 (F30): FAT32, 64 GB fine, same formats. 3 Series 2019 on (G20): exFAT and FLAC join the party, USB-C in the console.

What USB music formats does the BMW 3 Series support?

It depends on the generation — find your model years:

Model years Radio system Plays USB stick
2006 – 2011 (E90) CCC / CIC iDrive (USB option) MP3, WMA, AAC FAT32 only, ≤32 GB
2012 – 2018 (F30) NBT / NBT Evo MP3, WMA, AAC (ALAC from 2017) FAT32, 64 GB works
2019 + (G20) iDrive 7 MP3, WMA, AAC, ALAC, FLAC, WAV FAT32 or exFAT; USB-C console port

Not sure which radio you have? Go by the model year — or check the general rules in the BMW USB music guide.

My 3 Series won't play music from USB

The 3 Series-specific causes, each with its fix.

E90 ignores every stick

The fix: First check the port exists — USB was an option (6FL) on the E90. If it's there, a 32 GB FAT32 stick on the glovebox/armrest cable is the combination that works.

FLAC rips skipped on an F30

The fix: No iDrive before 2019 plays FLAC. Convert to ALAC (2017+ F30s play it losslessly) or MP3 320 for earlier cars.

G20 console port charges but won't play

The fix: Use a data-capable USB-C stick or adapter — charge-only cables have no data lines. The armrest USB-A port also plays media.

These are the 3 Series-specific ones — the BMW guide covers the problems shared by every BMW: USB not detected, endless indexing, “Unknown” titles, file limits and more.
