BMW 5 Series USB Music: Formats, Problems and Fixes

5 Series owners carry serious collections for serious miles, and the G30 generation rewards them: exFAT sticks, Apple Lossless, FLAC from 2019, and comfortable browsing at 40,000 songs. The F10 years need a little more care. Here's both.

The short answer

5 Series 2010–2016 (F10): FAT32 stick, MP3/WMA/AAC, keep it under ~10,000 songs for snappy browsing. 5 Series 2017 on (G30): exFAT sticks up to 256 GB, ALAC from launch, FLAC from the 2019 iDrive 7 update — 40,000 songs browse smoothly.

What USB music formats does the BMW 5 Series support?

It depends on the generation — find your model years:

Model years Radio system Plays USB stick
2004 – 2010 (E60) CCC / CIC (USB option) MP3, WMA, AAC FAT32 only, ≤32 GB
2010 – 2016 (F10) CIC / NBT MP3, WMA, AAC FAT32, 64 GB works
2017 + (G30) NBT Evo / iDrive 7 MP3, WMA, AAC, ALAC (FLAC from 2019) FAT32 or exFAT, up to 256 GB

Not sure which radio you have? Go by the model year — or check the general rules in the BMW USB music guide.

My 5 Series won't play music from USB

The 5 Series-specific causes, each with its fix.

Browsing crawls with a huge collection (F10)

The fix: Older iDrive indexes slow down past ~10,000 songs. Split the collection across two sticks, or trim — the G30 handles 40,000+ without breaking a sweat.

Lossless library won't play on a 2018 G30

The fix: 2017–2018 G30s play ALAC but not FLAC. Convert FLAC to ALAC — still lossless, plays natively. From 2019 (iDrive 7), FLAC plays as-is.

Gaps between tracks on live albums

The fix: Use ALAC or FLAC (where supported) — iDrive plays those gapless. MP3s converted with padding will always have tiny seams.

These are the 5 Series-specific ones — the BMW guide covers the problems shared by every BMW: USB not detected, endless indexing, “Unknown” titles, file limits and more.
