BMW X3 USB Music: Formats, Problems and Fixes

The X3 follows the classic BMW pattern: strict FAT32 years, then the modern free-for-all — with the media port tucked into the armrest the whole time. Here's each generation and its fixes.

The short answer

X3 2010–2017 (F25): FAT32 stick, 32 GB the safe size, MP3, WMA or AAC files. X3 2018 on (G01): exFAT sticks work, ALAC plays, and FLAC joins from the 2019 iDrive 7 cars on.

What USB music formats does the BMW X3 support?

It depends on the generation — find your model years:

Model years Radio system Plays USB stick
2004 – 2010 (E83) Basic radios (USB rare) MP3 where fitted FAT32, ≤16 GB
2010 – 2017 (F25) CIC / NBT MP3, WMA, AAC FAT32 only, 32 GB safe
2018 + (G01) NBT Evo / iDrive 7 MP3, WMA, AAC, ALAC (FLAC from 2019) FAT32 or exFAT

Not sure which radio you have? Go by the model year — or check the general rules in the BMW USB music guide.

My X3 won't play music from USB

The X3-specific causes, each with its fix.

The dash port charges the phone but plays nothing

The fix: That's the charge-only port. The media port is in the center armrest — plug the stick there and it indexes immediately.

A 128 GB stick isn't seen on an F25

The fix: F25s read FAT32 only, and big sticks ship as exFAT. Reformat as FAT32 (32 GB sticks are the no-surprises choice).

Album covers missing on the widescreen

The fix: iDrive shows embedded art only. Embed covers into the files at ~500×500 — folder.jpg files are ignored.

These are the X3-specific ones — the BMW guide covers the problems shared by every BMW: USB not detected, endless indexing, “Unknown” titles, file limits and more.

Make your X3 play everything.

Pick “BMW X3” in the app and it applies exactly these rules: the right stick setup for your model year, only the necessary conversions, name tags repaired and songs in the right order. The free trial shows what it would fix before you pay.
